The Personal History of David Copperfield is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Armando Iannucci. Based on the Dickens’ Victorian era novel David Copperfield, this terrifically likable, genial adaptation taps into the author’s humanity and optimism, if perhaps at the expense of the novel’s darker side. Iannucci’s emphasis is on the forward gallop of the story –taking his eye off the pathos and sadness, though there is a strong focus on poverty and homelessness. But everything’s just sparkling and it’s a richly satisfying experience.
