Synopsis

In honour of World Aids Day (1 December), Reading Film Theatre presents Philadelphia (1993), a film notable for being one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to explicitly address HIV/AIDS and homophobia.

Andrew Beckett, a young Philadelphia lawyer with AIDS, keeps his homosexuality hidden from his employers. When he is suddenly dismissed by his law firm, Andrew hires a small-time, homophobic lawyer as the only willing advocate for a wrongful dismissal suit.

For his performance as Andrew Beckett, Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 66th Academy Awards, while the song “Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Ron Nyswaner was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Roberta Maxwell.
