Written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, Fanny and Alexander was meant to be his final picture before retiring. His script is semi-autobiographical with the title characters based on himself and his sister Margareta.
The story centres on two young Swedish children in the 1900s experiencing the many comedies and tragedies of their lively and affectionate theatrical family, the Ekdahls.
The film was critically acclaimed and won four Academy Awards, including for Best Foreign Language Film
