From acclaimed filmmaker Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire), Buena Vista Social Club follows the efforts of famed American musician Ry Cooper (a close friend of Wenders) to bring Cuban danzónmusic to international attention. His plan is to bring together an ensemble of legendary but mostly forgotten Cuban musicians to record a new album and perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall in the face of broiling political tension between Cuba and the US. A one-of-a-kind musical experience ensues.
In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
