Paul Dano’s beautiful directorial debut captures the crumbling of a 1950’s American family when a boy witnesses his parent’s marriage falling apart after his mother, Jeanette finds another man. The haze Jeanette finds herself in is due to her husband (Gyllenhaal) leaving to fight wildfires and the absence of a patriarchal figure leaves the son to witness the quietly devastating unravelling of a marriage.

An extremely watchable movie, beautifully and even luxuriously appointed in its austere evocation of small-town America – THE GUARDIAN
