Tom (Michael Fassbender) is a Great War veteran who marries Isabel (Alicia Vikander), a pretty young woman bereaved in the War, after a brief courtship. They go to live in the lighthouse he is in charge of on a remote west Australian island. Her total, consuming passion is to have a child and she loses two babies in the space of two years. She is inconsolable until a boat is washed up containing a dead man and a live baby. Tom and Alicia adopt the baby and years later, on discovering the child’s true parentage, face a heart-wrenching moral dilemma.
