Career con artist Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) online. As Betty opens up her life and home to him, Roy is amazed to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life. As the two become closer and closer, Betty’s grandson (Russell Tovey) grows suspicious about the old man’s motives, turning what should be a simple swindle into a battle of wits.
USA 2019 – Directed by Bill Condon with Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, Russell Tovey – 109 min
This mystery thriller is outrageous and irresistible, an old-fashioned drama with dashes of Patricia Highsmith, Patrick Hamilton, John le Carré and maybe Elizabeth Jane Howard’s memoir Slipstream – THE GUARDIAN
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen deliver an acting duet to die for in Bill Condon’s delectably clever and civilized con-artist thriller – VARIETY
