Daniel Day-Lewis gives us his cinema swan song in this new film where he plays Woodcock, celebrated dressmaker in Britain in the 1950s, under pressure from the New Look and influences from France. At his lowest, Woodcock falls in love with a shy German waitress and he sees in her a grace and beauty no one else does. Dazzled, she comes to live with him as his assistant/model in his London fashion house, which Woodcock runs with his sister. As Woodcock becomes ever more controlling, his submissive girlfriend must find new ways to re-establish her emotional mastery over him.
