Pain and Glory finds writer-director Pedro Almodóvar drawing on his own life to rewarding effect as only a master filmmaker can. This nostalgic and personal film slips from one wispy and wistful short story to the next. Banderas’s performance is warm and nuanced, and fans will be pleased to see the signature richly coloured production design, and to hear the expected ominous music.
