Menashe (U)

Thursday 1st March 2018 - 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Palmer Building

This poignant film offers a rare glimpse into Brooklyn’s ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community. In accordance with tradition, Menashe, a kind but hapless grocery store clerk, is faced with the choice of remarrying immediately or giving up custody of his 10 year old son, Rieven, following the death of his wife. This film is performed in Yiddish by a cast of first time actors and has won several awards.

USA 2017 – Yiddish with subtitles – directed by Joshua Z Weinstein – with Menashe Lustig, Yoel Falkowitz  – 82 min

Menashe is a quiet triumph, pulling back when other films would go too far, delivering an engaging drama of intimate detail and considerable humanity – GUARDIAN
