In Manchester by the Sea, the life of a solitary Boston janitor is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. After the death of his brother Joe, Lee learns that he has been made guardian of his nephew Patrick. Lee returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife and the community where he grew up. Bonded by Joe who held their family together, they struggle to adjust to a world without him.
