By 1968 Judy Garland is close to bankruptcy. Despite her iconic status, her reputation for unreliability has made her all but unemployable in America. Yet in England, she’s adored.
Impresario Bernard Delfont throws her a lifeline with a series of shows at the Talk of the Town in London. For Garland, this is a last-ditch chance to make enough money to finally settle down with her two young children. Director Rupert Goold’s dazzling film depicts Judy as a frail, vulnerable woman, played with sensitivity in a poignant, awards-worthy turn by Renee Zellweger.
