America in the 1950s: Marcus Mesner (Logan Lerman) is an idealistic young man from a working-class Jewish family in Newark. In order to avoid the Korean War draft, he enrols in a small college in Ohio. Once there he encounters oppressive social conformism, anti-Semitism and sexual repression. This accomplished film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Philip Roth.
