Alice Rohrwacher’s magic-realist fable follows the travails of Lazzaro, a kind-hearted peasant whose good nature makes him a soft touch for everyone in his village. Amidst an insular community founded at every level on exploitation — of workers, the poor, the gullible, the unfortunate – Lazzaro forges an unlikely friendship with Tancredi, the scheming son of the village matriarch. Tancredi persuades the hapless Lazzaro to help him stage his fake kidnapping to steal the ransom from his despised mother, but their plans soon unravel with life-changing results.
