In 1940 thousands of soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force awaited evacuation from northern France after the disastrous battle of Dunkirk. Nolan’s film is big on spectacle and individual human-drama stories as he takes us terrifyingly close to the desperation on the beach, the people’s flotilla at sea, and the dog-fights in the skies above.
This is a powerful, superbly crafted film with a story to tell, avoiding war porn in favour of something desolate and apocalyptic…It is Nolan’s best film so far. It also has Hans Zimmer’s best musical score: an eerie, keening groaning accompaniment to a nightmare – THE GUARDIAN
